Where to play tennis in Teddington

Teddington takes its tennis seriously, a few miles from Wimbledon. Whether you want a club to belong to, a court for an hour on a Sunday, or lessons for the kids, here are your options.

For a club to call home: Teddington Lawn Tennis Club

Teddington Lawn Tennis Club on Vicarage Road has been here since 1914. It started in 1908 as a Sunday school club on Queens Road. It has six courts, three artificial grass and three artificial clay, and five of them are floodlit, so play carries on after dark.

It’s a members’ club with a strong social side: sessions for different levels, group and private coaching from an LTA-accredited head coach, and a busy league programme of 16 teams in summer and nine in winter. On a summer evening, the terrace by the courts is a lovely place for a post-match drink. To join or book lessons, contact the membership secretary through the club website.

For a casual game: Udney Park

If you just want a court for an hour, the courts at Udney Park on Cromwell Road (TW11 9EL) are run by Tennis for Teddington, working with Teddington Rugby Club. Non-members can pay and play by the hour and book a few days ahead online or through the ClubSpark Booker app. You get a gate code just before your slot. Regular players can take out a low-cost priority membership to book further ahead. Tennis for Teddington also runs coaching courses for all ages and standards, and you can join part-way through a term if there’s space.

For the full works: the Lensbury

At the riverside Lensbury, tennis is part of a much bigger picture. There are 24 courts for tennis, padel, squash and pickleball, with coaching available, plus a gym, pools and more than 165 classes a week. It’s a membership club, so think of it as somewhere to join rather than drop in, but it’s the place for anyone who wants to try padel or pickleball too.

Teddington Sports Centre has an outdoor multi-use games area with two tennis courts. Check with the centre for booking.
