Walk to the end of Ferry Road and the town gives way to the river. Teddington Lock marks the point where the Thames stops being tidal, and there’s something satisfying about standing at the exact spot where London’s river becomes the country’s.

Stand on the footbridges for a while. Narrowboats, cruisers and the odd rowing eight work through the locks below, and on the far side the towpath runs towards Ham and Richmond. It’s an easy, flat stroll, and the best way to show a visitor what Teddington is about.
