Few towns this size have a building like it. The former St Alban’s Church rises over Ferry Road like it was meant for somewhere grander, and walking in for the first time, the scale of the nave is a genuine surprise.

These days it belongs to the arts. There are exhibitions, concerts, classes for adults and children, and the art and craft fairs that bring in makers from across south-west London. Come for a fair and you’ll leave with a print, a mug, or at least a new respect for Victorian ambition.
